The Gunners' boss remains confident that his side can persist in handling with fitness issues after disclosing that star striker Kai Havertz will not return for a few more weeks.

Prolonged Recovery for Havertz

The Germany international has been absent for months due to an operation on his knee. Hoped to return earlier in December, Arteta revealed the player encountered a problem when advancing his recovery and failed to reach “the next phase.”

“We took lessons, and managed to assemble a squad that is far more dependable and has increased versatility,” stated the manager.

Tactical Decisions for Midweek Fixture

This update leaves a dilemma for the midweek match against Brentford. The manager needs to decide between sticking with Mikel Merino, who got a goal playing out of position on Sunday, or reinstating Viktor Gyökeres, who came back after a fitness issue in the latter stages. Long-term absentee Gabriel Jesus is an option post-recovery.

Defensive Concerns Remain

Additional concerns affect centre-back William Saliba and attacker Leandro Trossard, who both missed the Stamford Bridge game. Consequently, recent arrivals Cristhian Mosquera and Piero Hincapié are likely to continue in the heart of the defence for the league leaders.

Arteta believes the significant outlay on reinforcements in the last transfer window has placed the club in a far better place to handle such absences.

Squad Depth Vital for Premier League Pursuit

Questioned if a larger pool of players was helping their championship push, the manager agreed. “Absolutely, because this season has been worse in some areas, and now what’s happening with the defence,” he added.

“History has shown us that we have to use players in various roles, and they need to be prepared to fulfil different roles if we aim to challenge at the highest level. And the example of Mikel is probably the prime illustration.”

Arteta's Support for Frustrated Havertz

Commenting on the setback previously mentioned by national team coach Julian Nagelsmann, Arteta offered further detail. “He followed all protocols. He was unable to progress to the required step and now the signs are like we have unlocked that.”

The manager conveyed his keenness to welcome him back. “We’re all desperate to have him. I mean, it’s a player that, in my view, I value highly for his contributions to the team, but his personality, his personality. I observe his frustration while sidelined.”
