Cameron Norrie secured the most notable victory of his professional journey by coming back from a lost first set to overcome top-ranked player Carlos Alcaraz 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the second round of the prestigious indoor tournament.

While he had before defeated Alcaraz on two separate matches, this victory represents Norrie's maiden success over a reigning world top-ranked player.

"Massive. So big for me," commented Norrie, who is now the fifth UK male player in the record books to overcome a world No 1. "Coming back from a physical setback last year, I fell in the first round of qualifiers here. I just aimed to embrace my performance in the closing months of the year. To get a victory like this, it's the most significant victory of my professional life, my initial victory over the world No 1 and probably the most in-form player in the sport right now."

The British player, positioned 31st globally, also ended Alcaraz's impressive run of nine straight final appearances and 17 consecutive Masters 1000 successes, which represented the best series of performances in the Spanish star's developing career.

The top seed appeared to be advancing smoothly to a win at the start as he cruised through the opening set. Yet, the British contender slowly battled back into contention by executing with greater precision and dragging the Spaniard into extended, demanding exchanges. His persistent consistency and dependability steadily left its mark.

During large parts of the battle, Alcaraz performed well on serve but he found it challenging to locate his rhythm off his groundstrokes. The young star looked notably struggling striking his signature shot, which has been the most effective stroke in the world for much of this season, producing 29 forehand miscues and a combined of 54 errors. On the other side, the British player gave Alcaraz so few mistakes, maintaining his steadiness, physicality and power the entire contest while delivering effective serves and selecting opportunities to advance into the court and play aggressively.

After dealing for an extended period due to a serious physical setback and challenges with his performance, Norrie fell as far down as 91st in the rankings this year. Having reached the advanced stages at the grass-court major and the Roland Garros second week after that, this win further underlines the experienced player's improvement as he aims to make his way to the top 20 and even higher. Alcaraz, notwithstanding his incredible achievements, is still hasn't master how to produce his best tennis on indoor courts.
