Cameroon Political Opposition Figure to Face Legal Proceedings Over Post-Election Violence, Government Declares

Political Protest in Cameroon
Numerous in Cameroon show outrage over the fact that Paul Biya has won an eighth term

The nation's Minister of the Interior Paul Atanga Nji has announced that opposition leader Issa Tchiroma Bakary will undergo legal proceedings over allegations that he provoked "violent post-election demonstrations".

At least four demonstrators have been killed during clashes between police and military and opposition supporters since the presidential election on 12 October, with the 92-year-old head of state winning an eighth presidential mandate.

The opposition leader maintains that he was the true winner, a assertion disputed by Biya's ruling party, the ruling CPDM.

Aggressive responses by police and security officers on demonstrators have worried the international community, with the United Nations, African Union and EU urging moderation.

Official's Accusations

Recently, Nji alleged Tchiroma Bakary of coordinating what he labeled "unauthorized" rallies leading to the fatalities, and also rebuked him for announcing success in the election.

He further stated that the opposition leader's "co-conspirators responsible for an rebellious scheme" will also be prosecuted.

Poll Figures

Cameroon's leader, who came to power in 1982 and is now the world's oldest head of state, obtained the October 12 presidential election with 53.7% of the votes, compared to just over a third for the challenger, according to Cameroon's Constitutional Council.

Opposition Response

Tchiroma Bakary is has not yet commented to the government's decision to bring him to court, but he had before declared that he refused to acknowledge a fraudulent outcome - and that he was undaunted of being detained.

When results were announced, he said that security forces opened fire on protesters assembled near his residence in the city of Garoua, killing at least two people.

Probe Launched

Recently, the interior minister disclosed that an investigation would be started into clashes prior to and following the publication of the election results.

"Throughout the violence, some of the individuals involved were killed," he stated, without offering a precise figure of demonstrators who have been fatally injured in the incidents.

The minister added that multiple personnel of the law enforcement also suffered serious injuries.

Ongoing Circumstances

Although Nji asserted the situation throughout Cameroon was now manageable, demonstrators are still demonstrating in certain regions of the country, especially in these two cities, where protesters set up barricades on Tuesday, and burnt tires on the roads.

Experts caution that the post-electoral violence could plunge the country into a political crisis.
