Putin Assures Steady Energy Supplies to India in Snub of American Demands

During a defiant message to the United States, Leader Vladimir Putin stated to PM Narendra Modi that Russia is prepared to maintain “continuous” deliveries of energy resources to India. These remarks came as the two leaders met in Delhi and asserted their relationship were “resilient to outside influence.”

A Statement Directed at the West

Putin's comments, made on Friday, appeared to be a direct challenge at the United States and its allies, who have repeatedly attempted to pressure New Delhi into scaling back its longstanding links with Moscow. This comes follows previous US actions, notably the introduction of import duties targeting New Delhi due to its acquisition of Moscow's energy exports.

“Moscow remains a dependable exporter of energy resources and anything required for the development of India’s industry,” Putin stated. “Russia is prepared to keep ensuring the steady supply of fuel for the rapidly growing Indian economy.”

Prime Minister Modi, without naming energy specifically, reinforced the theme by saying that “secure fuel supplies has been a robust and crucial cornerstone of the bilateral alliance.”

Defying US Interference

Before the meeting, in a TV appearance, Putin had challenged Washington's stance on India's oil imports. He argued, “If the US can claim the privilege to buy our atomic materials, then why can't India claim the equivalent access?”

The visit was his initial visit to India after the start of the war in Ukraine, and Moscow and Delhi made a clear attempt to demonstrate that the friendship between the men persisted strongly.

A Personal Greeting

Employing an unusual gesture, Modi met Putin right off the plane. They shared a warm hug akin to old friends before enjoying a closed-door supper together.

The Indian prime minister in his statement called India's relationship with Russia as “a lodestar” and said it was “founded on reciprocal esteem and deep trust.”

Strengthening Defence and Economic Partnerships

The meeting produced several important deals regarding military and trade relations. One significant result was the completion of an strategic roadmap that runs to 2030, which aims to increase twofold mutual trade to one hundred billion dollars each year by the target year.

The leaders also vowed to recalibrate their military partnership. Although Russia is still India's largest source of weapons, its share has diminished in recent years as India aims to broaden its procurement.

The joint statement highlighted plans for the joint production of advanced military systems, even if explicit mention of deals for the Sukhoi Su-57 were omitted.

In conclusion, Moscow and Delhi affirmed that during the “ongoing challenging, tense, and unpredictable international environment, Russian-Indian ties stay durable to foreign influence.”
