The esteemed football figure has declared that he is not pursuing a return to football management, pointing out that it would be tough to recreate the higher calling he experienced as head of the Three Lions.

Southgate expressed his aim to channel his attention toward supporting young people and countering what he described as a pervasive negative narrative currently existing in the country.

Pursuing Fresh Opportunities Outside of Coaching

During a broadcast discussion, Southgate was prompted regarding talk linking him with available jobs in the English football and other leagues.

“I’ve had one of the most incredible jobs in football which also had a higher purpose because it was my country,” he replied. “That’s going to be very hard to replicate. Having had 37 years in football I’m enjoying finding other areas where I think I might be able to make a difference.”

Dedication to Mentorship

Leading up to the release of his new title, Dear England: Lessons in Leadership, Southgate stated that he is deeply committed about setting examples for young people, applying insights from his period as England’s men’s football manager between 2016 and 2024, as well as his experiences as a parent.

He maintains that his time managing the squad, during which the team evolved from being deeply unpopular to broadly loved, holds general lessons.

“At the beginning, there was a major gap between the team and the fans,” he said. “Many perceived the squad as arrogant, but we managed to change that perception. I witnessed firsthand how the team could unite individuals from all backgrounds.”

Parenting and Shaping the Next Generation

Reflecting on his role as a parent, the coach commented: “You want to give your kids the best possible start, but there is a point when they don’t want to listen to parents any more. I experienced that in my house in the same way everybody else will … but I do think this is an important space for us.”

He added: “There’s a negative narrative around our country at the moment and we’ve got to give young people hope, we’ve got to give them guidance. We’ve got incredible talent but we need to them to find the right role models, the right friendship groups because those decisions have such a big impact on the rest of their lives.”

Unity Over Conflict

He asserted that “there is more that unites us [in the UK] than divides us” but that the cultural focus often centers on division.

“The reasons for public dissatisfaction are clear,” he said. “Financial struggles affect numerous communities, fueling calls for transformation. Yet, I’ve observed the capacity to bring the nation together. During the pandemic, I witnessed neighbors helping each other—that’s when the UK excels, demonstrating strength and unity in adversity.”

Southgate’s new release, Dear England, is expected to present further insights on management and national identity inspired by his remarkable career.
