The network's Premier Fresh Series of This Year Secures a Substantial Extension for Two More Seasons.

During the fall season, the late-night programming block welcomed back its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. However, shortly thereafter, the network launched a brand-new animated series with a markedly softer vibe. Haha, You Clowns proved to be gentle and comforting, evoking a animated take of a laid-back talk show. In an era often characterized by bleakness, this show's earnestness found an audience and propelled it a surprise hit.

A Major Commitment

In mid-December, the network made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for a further two seasons. This gives showrunner Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to develop the story of the Campbell family. The series centers on three respectful teenage brothers whose central trait is their deep love for their single father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four central characters.

"I’m so grateful to the fans of the show who took a chance on the show and shared it with others," stated Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for a little longer."

Network Praise

In the same announcement commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "profoundly sincere and strangely uncanny." He thanked the fans who found the show and supported its uniquely offbeat appeal.

"All of you showed up for this new show, praised it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Different Kind of Comedy

When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a gentle counterpart" to other adult animated fare. There’s something deeply soothing about observing this lovable family navigate their daily lives.

At the time, creator Joe Cappa expressed his goal to move the comedy genre beyond its long-running cynical streak. He traced this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.

“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” said Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we need to laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”

What Comes Next

Now, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa could potentially help usher in that very evolution. At a minimum, the renewal ensures audiences a little more time to enjoy the warm glow of the endearing Campbell clan.

The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. All episodes is available for streaming on HBO Max.
