In a first day in office, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “transform” America's largest city, declaring “a different age” and an bold start to his term.

A Historic Figure

The new figure, who was a relatively obscure state assemblyman, has become the city's first mayor born in Africa. He also made history by being the first to be sworn in using the Islamic holy text.

“A time such as this comes rarely and even more uncommon is it that the citizens whose grasp the levers of change,” Mamdani stated.

Defying advice to be modest, the mayor declared: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to change is that of modest goals. Beginning today we will rule expansively and audaciously.”

Adhering to Democratic Socialist Convictions

Mamdani openly embraced his socialist politics. “I was elected as a socialist leader and I will lead as one. I will not compromise my ideals for fear of being called extreme,” he proclaimed to rapturous applause.

The swearing-in was a two-part event, starting with a midnight oath-taking in a former subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's ascent as a victory over the status quo.

A Costly Policy Agenda

Mamdani now faces one of the most demanding jobs in American politics, with a platform featuring:

• Universal childcare
• Fare-free public buses
• A cap on rents for about 1 million households
• A trial program of municipally-operated grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion cost of these initiatives may be challenging to fund. Mamdani has pledged to tax more heavily the richest residents and big business. However, as a city subject to the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Navigating Political Challenges

The new mayor will deal with skepticism from some members of the Jewish community alarmed by his past criticisms regarding Israel. Tensions were highlighted during the transition when a senior aide resigned over offensive past tweets.

Mamdani has moved to address these concerns by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, preventing the appearance of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “socialist” and threatened withholding government money. Despite this, a recent meeting between the two was reportedly unexpectedly friendly.

The Fundamental Tests of Governing

Ultimately, New York mayors are evaluated by their success in providing essential functions: trash collection, reducing the rat infestation, repairing potholes, and making sure smooth subway operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his administration's anti-crime efforts, pointing to historically low numbers of homicides and gun violence in 2025, with murders recorded.

As his work begins, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Queens apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual warning about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which allegedly only troubles those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his address with a simple declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
