From the very beginning of the fourth campaign, fresh DM Brennan Lee Mulligan has maintained audience suspense with extensive world-building, a colorful mix of heroes, and a exciting storyline featuring celestial beings, fiends, and dark forces expanding in influence within the city.
Warning: Spoilers for the third episode of the new season follow below.
The Soldiers Table Revealed
The third episode ended with a dramatic pause and introduced the first table of adventurers who will branch out from the central cast to embark on their separate journey, separate from the remaining groups.
The Soldiers table features the determined fighter (brought to life by Travis), Thimble (Laura), the fierce warrior (the cast member), Wicander (Sam Riegel), and Kattigan (Robbie).
Why Split the Party?
With a large ensemble, it was clear from the beginning that having everyone at a single group would be unfeasible.
Hence, the initial installments of the new season serve as an Overture, intertwining the individual narratives before branching into three separate parties: Soldiers, Schemers, and Seekers.
Characteristics of the Warrior Group
As described by the DM, the combat-focused party is for adventurers who enjoy a traditionally charged battle-oriented gameplay experience where peaceful solutions are rare.
Initially, characters like the squeamish cleric Wicander Halovar might seem unsuited, but the developments of the third episode make it clear why these particular heroes are ideally matched for the combat party.
Reasons to Leave
First, the group knows exactly where to proceed after a violent initial meeting with the antagonists.
A former ally of the deceased character—whose death started the campaign’s events—used The Crow Keepers for his selfish purposes, entering Thjazi’s hideout, assaulting the rogue, and stealing all the powerful objects to auction.
Casimir then cleared his debts and fled to a Halovar stronghouse in the northern region, beyond the city, with Teor’s brother hot on his heels.
Individual Reasons
Secondly, each member has a individual motive to leave the city the metropolitan area:
- Thimble, as the close ally and trusted friend, seeks retribution.
- Kattigan knows the northern area and advises that it is a hostile location.
- The strong character and The healer, having defied his house’s orders to kill Teor and instead rescued him, have nowhere else to go.
- However, their status as prominent individuals in the powerful family could enable the party enter areas they normally couldn’t.
- Additionally, Teor pledged a eternal obligation to The cleric for his rescue and will now accompany him everywhere.
Wanted and Hunted
Finally, all of them are sought by the powers that govern the city for a range of causes, making staying in the city no longer safe:
- Thimble and The character are recognized lawbreakers.
- Tyranny and The cleric betrayed House Halovar and the army of fiends they are partnered with.
- Teor is targeted for elimination by the clan.
This means them little choice but to travel to the northern region in pursuit of the antagonist.
Upcoming Developments
Based on the latest episode’s Cooldown, we find out that the combat party won’t be around in the upcoming installment, leaving the remaining eight players to form the Seekers and Strategists parties.
Fans can expect finding out which players will be assigned to which table in the story’s concluding setup installment, released on October 24.
