Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Comments

The English opener Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of statements from skipper Ben Stokes about the team environment not being "weak men".

Stokes made those words in several conversations following England's loss in the second Ashes against Australia previously.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where England now face a series loss at the earliest opportunity, the captain stated he had allowed his message to "circulate freely" within the squad.

"I have completed the necessary discussions over the past two days that I needed to have done," said the England leader.

However, after the opener made 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the media with some skepticism," he added.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

The captain made the "fragile individuals" comment subsequent to his side suffered a loss in Brisbane to fall 2-0 down.

The team subsequently went on a break to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and third matches.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, Stokes revealed his players had held "honest" talks and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their effort to stay alive in the series.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman asserted the messaging from the captain and head coach Brendon McCullum had remained consistent with their previous three years in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, unchanged," noted the opener. "It's on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with great liberty. It felt like we could do something special going into this Test."

Australia On the Verge of Rapid Series Victory

Crawley's wicket on day four was part of a crucial three-wicket burst by Australian spinner Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in a short spell – he also bowled Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – meant England six down for 207 chasing a notional target of 435.

Consequently, the home team need just four more wickets on the last day to move to an unassailable 3-0 advantage with three Tests.

Defeat will extend the English team's winless run in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth straight away Ashes defeat.

The current battle will be completed in only eleven days of cricket – with England fell the first two Tests in two and four days each.

The last time 1921, when Australia completed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been decided so quickly. Australia have also won in eleven days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"This is disheartening," said the batsman. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel now."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we'll certainly approach it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"It's been difficult. They're a very, very good side. It was always going to be tough touring here against them. They were the front-runners coming in to it they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Position In Question

While Crawley's performance in the third Test probably answers doubts about his short-term future in the England team, Ollie Pope appears under immense pressure for his position in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 runs in England's second knock on day four, adding to his poor record versus the old enemy.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has never made a fifty and averages 17.62.

Only one other English batsman since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has featured as many times in the top order in the Ashes and returned a lower average.

However, Crawley said any notion his teammate is under the microscope originates with "you guys" – meaning the press – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," said he. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year to be frank."

"He has produced several excellent innings. It is noise from the outside. There is no discussion of that nature on Ollie in the camp," he concluded.
